Former Kentucky House Speaker Jeff Hoover and two other lawmakers are seeking to seal sworn testimony of a former female staffer who accused them of sexual harassment in a case that rocked Frankfort and cost Hoover his leadership job as the top House Republican. A lawyer for Hoover and Republican Reps. Jim DeCesare and Michael Meredith seeks to block the public filing of a deposition of the former staffer with whom the three lawmakers entered a secret settlement last year, according to a motion filed Thursday in Franklin Circuit Court.
Lawyers representing two other Legislative Research Commission employees who filed whistleblower lawsuits related to the harassment case are seeking to file the deposition as part of those cases.
Hoover reed as speaker in January but remains in the legislature. He, DeCesare and Meredith are not involved in the lawsuits filed by one former and one current state employee against the state Legislative Research Commission. But in the motion filed Thursday, the lawmakers ask that they be allowed to intervene in those lawsuits in order to review the lengthy transcript of the woman who alleged harassment and request that portions be sealed.

The motion said they and the woman are parties to a "contract in which all parties agreed to keep certain information confidential," an apparent reference to the secret settlement reached last year. Shane Sidebottom, who represents the two employees in the whistleblower suits, along with lawyer Hans Poppe, said they are seeking to file the woman's deposition to support claims of their clients about what they learned about the alleged sexual harassment and what they tried to do about it. Gail Langendorf, a lawyer for the woman who provided the deposition, said her client provided testimony after she received a subpoeana. The effort to block filing of the woman's testimony follows a Wednesday posting on Twitter by Shannon Raglandpublisher of the Kentucky Trial Court Review, a legal periodical, reporting that the transcript of the eight-hour deposition is a "big deal" and contains outrageous allegations of sexual assault.
